3/15/2023 0 Comments Polyphonic music definition![]() ![]() Now considering polyphony, we can say that contrapuntal music, ie, music that uses counterpoint, is polyphonic. You'll also find that orchestral arrangements for a lot of modern music will still use these voice leading rules, which results in a rich harmony on top of the rock/pop sort of feel that doesn't exemplify this same richness. The open voicings will usually conform to voice leading rules and you can hear the difference in the richness of the harmony. If you play guitar, you can experience this difference by playing a I-IV-V progression in two different approaches: 1. Modern music tends to disregard these voice leading practices in many instances but will occasionally occur and the harmonies of those songs/parts of songs will sound very rich. This is why you can hear I-IV-V in a Classical setting and it feels very rich and dynamic, whereas the same chord progression in a rock setting doesn't have the same richness. If you don't follow the rules of counterpoint within your voice leading, your harmony will feel less rich at certain moments. This approach to counterpoint is carried over into the homonphony of the Classical era and beyond, rebranded as voice leading. So if you have a 3 part counterpoint texture, following the rules nicely, then two of the voices move in parallel fifths, it will sound like you lost a voice, ie, that you only have a 2 part texture suddenly. For example, we avoid parallel fifths and octaves because they are so closely related (based on the overtone series) and when you have parallel perfect intervals, you lose voice independence. The "rules" of counterpoint basically exist for the purpose of maintaining the independence of the different voices. This is most commonly discussed in terms of Baroque music, with Bach being a key example. Counterpoint is specifically the idea of having independent lines for each voice in a musical setting. There are some good answers here, so I'll just add my thoughts. ![]()
